Written by: David Nicoletti
The 2021 NAHL Supplemental Draft took place on June 2nd, and the Johnstown Tomahawks entered this year's draft with three draft picks (#27, #74, & #81). Last year during the Supplemental Draft, the Tomahawks picked three players as well (Max Neill, Matthew McQuade, and Alex Gritz). This year, the following players have been selected by the Tomahawks.
Alexander Tracy - Goaltender
Yes, that’s right ladies and gentlemen, Alex Tracy! The Tomahawks selected the former Hawk goalie with their first pick in the draft.
Tracy, standing at 5’11” and weighing in at 188 pounds, was a member of the Tomahawks back during the shortened COVID season in 2019-20. The Chicago native appeared in 24 games with the Hawks, holding a 17-4-0-1 record with a 2.12 GAA and a 0.935 save percentage, along with four shutouts. Certainly one of the best Hawks goalies of all time.
He won league awards that season such as NAHL (East) Goaltender of the Year, NAHL (East) Rookie of the Year, and was named to the NAHL All-East Division Rookie Team, and NAHL All-East Division Team.
Last season, Tracy was drafted in the third round (33rd overall) in the USHL Entry Draft by the Sioux City Musketeers. He spent the season there appearing in 18 games, holding a 9-7 record with a 2.66 GAA, a 0.889 save percentage, and one shutout.
Jake Black - Forward
With the Tomahawks next selection, they would choose forward Jake Black. Black is a native of Pomfret, Connecticut, born on March 5th, 2002 and standing at 5’11” at 181 pounds.
The right handed shot spent last season with the Islanders Hockey Club of the NCDC. Appearing in 17 games for the club, putting up 12 goals and 13 assists. As well as two assists in five playoff games.
Johnny Ulicny - Forward
With their final pick of the draft a couple selections later, Johnstown selected Tecumseh, Ontario native left winger, Johnny Ulicny. Ulicny was born on September 30th, 2002, he stands at 5’10” and weighs in at 172 pounds.
The left handed shot, like Black, spent his 2020-21 campaign with the Islanders Hockey Club of the NCDC. Ulicny would appear in 30 games with the team, scoring 11 goals and tallying 12 assists. He would also go on to tally two assists in five playoff games as well.
