Tomahawks and 1st Summit Arena Announce Covid-19 Procedures and Ticket Information for Home Opener

Written by: Jon Kohan

Seating will be limited for the Johnstown Tomahawks 2020-21 NAHL home opener due to Covid-19 procedures and policies.

With the Johnstown Tomahawks home opener just a few days away, the team, along with the arena they call home, 1st Summit Arena, have officially announce all the procedures and policies that will be in place this upcoming weekend (and possibly the entire season). The team also announced how fans can purchase tickets, which will be entirely general admission.

Arena Procedures and Policies

The following information is from 1st Summit Arena's press release they sent out to media and the public:

JOHNSTOWN – October 13, 2020 – The 1ST SUMMIT Arena @ Cambria County War Memorial, in conjunction with the Cambria County Emergency Services team, today released a capacity limit and best practices to reopening for the Johnstown Tomahawks regular season games set to begin this Friday October 16 and Saturday October 17.

The reopening guidelines are based on standards provided by federal, state, and local governments, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and public health organizations as of October 2020, so that Pennsylvania facilities can use appropriate recommendations in determining how to safely and responsibly reopen to the public.

“Our public event facilities bring us together for a common purpose and we are proud to stand with our Cambria county businesses, sports organizations and arts communities as venues around the area continue to safely reopen.” said Cambria County Department of Emergency Services Director Art Martynuska. He added, “It is critical that we operate safely, using measures that will preserve our health and the health of others.”

The following are arena guidelines:

- Fan capacity determined by fire code will be 1005

- Mask is mandatory upon entering the facility and concourse areas

- Temperature check upon entering the facility

- Sanitizing stations will be available in high traffic areas

- Social distancing ticket map will be implemented

The facility underwent a thorough cleaning provided by the Supervisor of Community Service, Hal Dues and his team. “We will continue to routinely clean the facility as it is being used in addition to supply PPE for the concessions and support staff” said Dues. “It’s been an overall great collective effort from county officials and operations staff to get the arena ready for opening weekend.”

This season, the arena box office will re-open to the public two days per week on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s from 10am to 5pm and it will also be open on event days starting at 10am.

For Tomahawks games, fans can purchase general admission tickets for $10.00 in person at the arena, via johnstowntomahawks.com/tickets or by calling the Tomahawks office at 814-536-GOAL. The Tomahawks will determine the available seats utilizing a social distancing map for general admissions after season ticket seats are assigned.

Johnstown Tomahawks Ticket Information

This information comes from the Tomahawks official website:

As of Tuesday, October 13, 2020 at 3:00pm (subject to change)

Follow the link below to purchase tickets.

  • All current Tomahawks season ticket holders will have their normal seating location honored for the 2020-21 season. Ticket holders who have not renewed yet are encouraged to do so as soon as possible.

  • We are currently experiencing a slight delay in our ability to print season tickets. All season ticket holders can pick up their tickets for this weekend only, beginning Thursday, October 15th at 12pm in the Tomahawks front office inside 1ST SUMMIT ARENA. The tickets to the remaining 25 home games will be available the week of the October 30/31st home games. We appreciate your continued patience as we navigate this unprecedented situation.

  • Until further noticed, ALL general public tickets will be $10 and available at this link. EARLY TICKET PURCHASE IS RECOMMENDED. Ticket pickup will be available on the day of your selected game. Personal ID will be required for pick up. Limited tickets will be available at the arena box office on Friday and Saturday.

  • To maximize safety amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the Tomahawks have implemented the below procedures for seating at home games:

  • All season ticket holder seats will be labeled as such and only available to the fan who owns the right to that seat.

  • Seats located within 6 feet of another season ticket holder seat will be labeled as unavailable. An exception is if a neighboring seat is also held by another season ticket holder. In such an instance, either available party is welcome to move to an open area in the arena at their discretion.

  • Non-season ticket holder seating will be general admission seating in marked sections (sections 5-13, 16-17 with the exception of season ticket holder seats in those areas.) Availability for these seats will be limited and purchase should be made prior to arriving at the arena.

Fans wishing to purchase single game tickets for either game of the home opening weekend (Friday/Saturday) are welcomed to do so here.

Tickets will NOT be mailed and will only be available for pickup in the main lobby of 1ST SUMMIT ARENA on the day of the selected game.

COVID-19 has placed an enormous strain on all of us; both personally and professionally. The Tomahawks and 1ST SUMMIT ARENA have worked diligently over the past seven months to ensure a safe, enjoyable experience is available for all fans during your time in the building. With that in mind, please remember that many of the circumstances we are faced with are out of anyone’s control, and situations and guidelines are subject to immediate change based on government regulations and guidelines.

If, for any reason, you do not feel safe, or are feeling sick with symptoms of COVID-19, please visit HOCKEYTV.com and enjoy the game from the comfort of your own home. We look forward to being able to host ALL of you as soon as possible, and the only way we can do that is if everyone follows guidelines, protocols and makes the best decisions for themselves and those around them while visiting our storied Arena. We want you all to be as safe and as healthy as possible so that we can once again play in front of a packed, LOUD house, as we continue our quest to bring an NAHL Championship to Johnstown!

Final Thoughts

In a perfect world, we'd be able to jam-pack the arena and show the NAHL why Johnstown is the best hockey town in the league, but as we've seen over the last seven-ish months, we live in anything but a perfect world.

While we might (us fans) find some of these policies a little annoying and a break from the norm, we have to consider a few things. One, at least we have hockey again. Two, the Tomahawks and 1st Summit Arena are doing the best they can with the limited options that they've been given from all different ranks of the government.

As the team has stated, if you can't make it to a game whether it be out of concern for safety, or just not getting a ticket in time with the limited seating, you can still watch all Tomahawks home and away games via Hockeytv.com

While not being able to operate at full capacity, the team will still, no doubt, lead the East Division in attendance, just like they have since they joined the NAHL in 2012.

With the way things are in the world today, it's just nice to have Tomahawks hockey to take your mind off of things - even if it's just for a few hours.
