Red vs White - Tomahawks Scrimmage Recap
Written by: David Nicoletti
The Johnstown Tomahawks held an inter-squad scrimmage game as the team hasn't played a regular-season game now more than three weeks ago due to Covid-19 guidelines and other unrelated issues with out-of-state teams.
The matchup was named Team Red vs. Team White military appreciation scrimmage. The cool thing about the scrimmage, former Tomahawks captain and SUNY-Plattsburgh commit Chris Trouba was in the house and dropped the ceremonial first puck.
Team White's starting line would consist of Reed Stark, Carson Grainer, and Andrew Murphy at forward. David Paluch, and birthday boy Dusty Geregach on defense. Butler, PA native Connor Strobel would be getting the start in net for Team White.
Team Red would bring out their starting forward line of Max Neill, Jared Gerger, and Holt Oliphant. On defense was Ryan Poorman and Caden Lewandowski. In goal starting for Team Red was Peyton Grainer, former OHLer and brother of Tomahawks forward Carson Grainer. Puck drop was at 7:43 pm as we were underway at 1ST SUMMIT ARENA.
Team Red forward Timur Alishlalov would have a great chance to score 3:30 in the first, but an amazing save by Connor Strobel would rob him.
FUN FACT: Timur Alishlalov was a Tomahawks 2020 fifth-round pick, and is a brother to former Tomahawks defensemen Malik Alishlalov.
Nothing else would happen in the first period as we would have a scoreless game after one period. Shots on goal were 10-9 for Team White.
The second period would begin as Team White would get on the board first. John Gelatt would score the game's first goal as the assist would go to Brendan Clark at the 1:20 mark of the second. Halfway through the second and Team White would switch goalies and replace Connor Strobel with Sam Evola. Another goal would be put up on the board shortly after the switch as Dusty Geregach for Team White would put them up 2-0. Assist would go to Andrew Murphy as the goal was scored at the 13:33 mark of the second.
A Team White Penalty would be assessed to Brendan Clark for roughing at the 19:30 mark of the second period. That's where things would end after 40 minutes of play as Team White was up 2-0. Shots on goal would be 21-18 for Team Red.
The third period was upon us, and we would see a Team Red penalty early. Aiden Ehresman would be called for tripping at the 2:09 mark of the period.
The penalty was killed, and a minute later, at 5:03, Dusty Geregach would score his second of the game for Team White to put them up 3-0. Assists would go to Reed Stark and Ethan Webb. Minutes later, at the 7:37 mark of the third, Team Red would get their first goal of the game as Caden Lewandowski would go on to score. Assists went to Holt Oliphant and Matt McQuade. Graniers shutout would end.
Minutes later, around the 10:40 mark of the third period, Matt McQuade for Team Red would score and make it a 3-2 game. Assists went to Timur Alishlalov and Caden Lewandoski. Team Red's Max Neill would receive a holding call at the 17:16 mark of the third, and Team White would take advantage. Anthony Mastromonica would score the power-play goal for Team White at the 18:57 mark of the third. The goal would be unassisted.
Team Red would pull the goalie, but it wouldn't be enough as Team White would go on and walk away with the 4-2 victory over Team Red.
Final shots on goal were 33-27 for Team White, with the final buzzer sounding at 9:36pm.
The Tomahawks are next scheduled to play on November 19th and 20th when they travel to face the Danbury Jr Hat Tricks. If those games get rescheduled will make sure to update everyone here on the blog.
