The Johnstown Tomahawks were back home at 1ST SUMMIT ARENA this past weekend for a two-game series against the Maryland Black Bears.

The first period of game one on Friday would see the Tomahawks up on the board first. Alternate captain Anthony Mastromonica would score his 15th goal of the year short-handed, Holt Oliphant would get the lone assist, as it would be a 1-0 Tomahawks game after 20 minutes.

After a scoreless second period, the Black Bears would strike early in the third to tie it 1-1. Forward Grady Friedman would score his fourth of the year, with the lone assist going to Maryland forward and captain, Luke Mountain.

John Gelatt would capitalize for the Tomahawks on the power-play to take the lead 2-1 midway through the third. Will Margel and Holt Oliphant would get the assists.

However, it wouldn’t stop the Black Bears from tying the game back up minutes later. Forward Jude Kurtas would get his ninth of the year, assists would go to Philip Törnqvist, and Luke Mountain.

Holt Oliphant (third star - two assists), and John Gelatt (second star - one goal) would be name two of the third stars. The first star would be Maryland’s Conor Cole, after scoring the game winning in the shootout for the Black Bears.

Maryland would take control of the first half of game two on Saturday. Scoring three unanswered goals in the first 21:35 of the game. Garrett Szydlowski, Philip Törnqvist, and Tanner Rowe would get the goals for the Black Bears. Jude Kurtas, Luke Mountain, Daniel Colabufo, Philip Törnqvist, and Josh Nixon would get the assists.

The Tomahawks would then attempt the comeback by scoring two unanswered goals between the last half of the second going into the third. Daniel Tkac and TJ Koufis would record the goals. Assists would be handed out to Reed Stark (2), Ethan Webb, and Daniel Tkac.

However it wouldn’t be enough for the Tomahawks, as the Maryland Black Bears would sweep the series and take game two over Johnstown at a final score of 3-2. Final shots on goal would be 41-15 for Johnstown.

Michael Morelli would get the win for the Black Bears, stopping 39/41 shots. Sam Evola would receive the loss for Johnstown, stopping 12/15.
