Johnstown Tomahawks vs. Maine Nordiques - Series Preview (4/8-4/9)



Four more games left in the regular season, two on the road, and two at home. This weekend, the Tomahawks will play those last set of road games, as they travel to Lewiston to take on the Maine Nordiques in a two-gamer With the playoffs at stake, Johnstown can clinch their spot if they sweep the Nordiques and get the four points this weekend. Or they at least get one win, and the Northeast Generals lose their contest to Maine this Sunday.

Maine comes into the weekend after taking part in three games this past weekend, all on the road; two against the Danbury Jr. Hat Tricks (4/1-4/2), and one against the Northeast Generals (4/3).


Game one against Danbury saw the Nordiques take home a 3-1 win. Forwards Tyler Gaulin, Ignat Belov, and Patrick Schmiedlin all recorded the goals. Avery Sturtz (G) took home the win by stopping 27/28. Game two however saw a much different result, as Danbury forced the series split by taking home a 6-3 win after an early back-and-forth contest. Rolling the Nords to Attleboro in hopes of caping off the weekend with four out six points.

A back-and-forth contest in the games first 40 minutes sent both teams' into the third with Northeast up 3-2. But as soon as the clock started up in the third, it was Maine who would be the ones to ride the momentum. Prior to the third, forward Brendan Gibbons scored the Nords only two goals, he completed the hat-trick 1:36 in, along with two more Maine goals from Reese Farrell (F), and Zion Green (F). Giving the Nordiques the 5-3 win over the Generals. Sturtz went on to stop 29/32 in the winning performance.

Johnstown comes into this series after coming up big in a two-game series against the NAHL's top dog New Jersey Titans. After coming back from a 3-1 deficient in the third period Friday night, the Titans forced OT on the Hawks. But it was Johnstown coming up big in the extra time. As Egan Schmitt (F) scored his second goal, as well as the game winner 2:20 into overtime, sending Johnstown out of game one with the 4-3 win.

Game two the following night saw a much better end result for the Tomahawks. Going into the third period up 3-0, New Jersey's Ryan Coughlin (F) attempted to start the comeback by scoring a power-play goal 6:11 into the period. However it wouldn't be enough, as captain Holt Oliphant (F) buried the empty-net goal late in the contest to score his second of the game. Sending Johnstown home with the big four points, as well as the 4-1 win.


Goaltender Matthew O'Donnell collected both of the wins in goal. Stopping a total of 66/70, and averaging weekend totals of a 1.95 GAA, and a 0.945 SV%.

LEAGUE RECOGNITION:


Congratulations to Tomahawks forward, Egan Schmitt, as he was honored by the NAHL as this week's East Division Star. During the Hawks two-game roadie against the Titans, the left handed shot from Cambridge, New York ended the series by collecting four points. He lit the lamp twice in game one, followed by picking up two apples the following night in game two.


Also a congrats to goaltender, Matthew O'Donnell, as he was honored as an Honorable Mention. As mentioned, the native of Waterbury, Connecticut picked up both of the wins in net for the Tomahawks during the two-game series. Stopping a total of 66/70, and averaging weekend totals of a 1.95 GAA, and a 0.945 SV%.


Stars of the Week | Week of April 4, 2022


Earlier this week, the NAHL also announced their Player of the Month Awards for March. No Hawks may have won, but it didn't stop two of them from appearing on the list as Honorable Mentions.


Zachary Murray (F) in the month of March has done some impressive work for the Tomahawks. Skating in seven games and totaling eight points (5G, 3A). Of those, a hat-trick night against the Jr. Hat Tricks on March 18th. A one goal and two assists game the following night. Followed by their next game on March 25th, with a goal and an assist on the road verses Jamestown.


Tyler DesRochers (D) seems to have found his mark ever since coming to the Tomahawks. Landing himself as a defensive honorable mention for the second straight month. Since coming over from Northeast, the Howell, New Jersey native has collected 20 points (1G, 19A) in 20 games for the Hawks. In March, seven of those points (1G, 6A) came in six games. His first goal as a Tomahawk came on the road in Jamestown on March 25th.
